Qatar’s producer price index jumps 102% on-year in Oct

Qatar’s Producer Price Index (PPI) for October 2021 reached 89.4 points showing an increase of 13.5 percent, compared to the previous month (September 2021), data published by Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) shows.
On year-on-year [Y-o-Y] basis, PPI of October 2021 showed an increase of 102.3 percent when compared to the PPI of October 2020.
The PPI covers goods relating to “Mining” (weight: 72.7 percent), “Manufacturing” (weight: 26.8 percent), and “Electricity & Water” (weight: 0.5 percent).
Mining
The PPI of October 2021 for this sector showed an increase by 16.3 percent when compared with PPI of September 2021, primarily due to the price increasing of “Crude petroleum and natural gas” by 16.3 percent, and 0.9 percent in “Stone, Sand and Clay”. PPI of October 2021, when compared with its counterpart in previous year (October 2020), there was an increase of 122.2 percent.
Manufacturing
An increase of 7.9 percent has been recorded in October 2021, when compared with the previous month. The price increase was seen in: “Refined Petroleum products” by 9.2 percent, followed by “Basic Chemicals” by 7.7 percent, “Basic Metals” by 2.9 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 2.6 percent, “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 2.1 percent, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.9 percent. However, the decreasing prices are noticed in “Beverages” by 1.6 percent, “Dairy products” by 0.6 percent, and “Other chemical products and fibers” by 0.4 percent. no change is noticed in “Juices”, and “Paper and Paper products”.
Comparing with the index of counterpart in the previous year (October 2020), “Manufacturing” PPI of October 2021 showed an increase of 70.0 percent. The major groups which explain this price increase are: “Basic chemicals” by 110.9 percent, followed by “Refined Petroleum products” by 73.0 percent, “Basic Metals” by 35.1 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 13.3 percent, “Paper and Paper Products” by 11.4 percent, “Other chemical products and fibers” by 6.2 percent, “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 0.7 percent, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.6 percent.
However, prices fall in “Juices” by 1.2 percent, and “Beverages” by 1.1 percent. no change is noticed in “Dairy products”.
Electricity & Water
The PPI of this group showed an increase of 3.5 percent compared to September 2021, resulting from prices rise in “Water” by 4.6 percent, and in “Electricity” by 2.4 percent. When compared to the PPI of October 2021 to the PPI of October 2020 [Y-o-Y], an increase of 8 percent was noted, affected by price rise in “Water” by 13.6 percent, and “Electricity” by 2.6 percent.
