Qatar’s industrial production in January 2022 rose 6 percent from December 2021, mostly due to a jump in the mining output, which includes oil and gas production.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), the key Industrial Production Index stood at 110.7 points in January, up 3.4 percent from a year ago.
The mining component of the index, which has a relative weightage of 83.6 percent, showed a jump of 7.2 percent month-on-month and an increase of 3.6 percent year- on- year.
The m-o-m climb in mining output was driven by increased production of crude oil and natural gas, by 7.2 percent. However, production under the “other mining and quarrying” group showed a month-on-month decline of 8.2percent.
Qatar’s manufacturing output — which has a relative weightage of 15.2 percent in the index — edged up 0.1 percent in January from December. PSA attributed this to rise in manufacture of refined petroleum products by 3.1 percent, food products by 2.9 percent, beverages by 1.2 percent and chemicals and chemical products by 0.3 percent.
However, manufacturing output in four groups went down — printing and reproduction of recorded media by 15.2 percent, basic metals by 3.6 percent, rubber and plastics products by 3.3 percent and cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 2.9 percent.
The manufacturing component of the IPI in January showed a 2.4-percent increase when compared with that in the same month last year.
The rise was driven mainly by rise in manufacture of food products by 5.9 percent, chemicals and chemical products by 5 percent, beverages by 3.6 percent and refined petroleum products by 0.7 percent. However, manufacturing output went down in four groups year-on-year — printing and reproduction of recorded media by 9.1 percent, basic metals by 5.5 percent, cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 4.6 percent and rubber and plastics products by 3.6 percent.
Electricity output — which accounts for 0.7 percent of IPI — declined 17.1 percent in January month-on-month and fell 6.3 percent year-on-year.
Similarly, water production (desalination), which carries a weightage of 0.5 percent, showed a decline of 5.5 percent month-on-month and a decline of 26.7 percent year-on-year.
