Qatar Chamber First Vice-Chairman Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Twar Al Kuwari recently opened the first-ever aquaponic internal farm for Agrico Agricultural Development at City Center’s Carrefour.
The opening ceremony was attended by Agrico Chairman Ahmed Al Khalaf and Agrico Managing Director Nasser Ahmed Al Khalaf as well as a number of businessmen.
Agrico has developed this national agricultural project which depends on the recent aquaponic technologies, which is considered one of the smartest and most sustainable agricultural systems.
Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that combines raising fish in tanks with soilless plant culture. In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from raising fish provides a natural fertilizer for the plants and the plants help to purify the water for the fish.
The project’s expected production capacity is about 32,000 tonnes annually of various types of vegetables. The project was initially launched on an area of 4,000 sqm to launch the horizontal indoor farming system.
Commenting on this occasion, Twar praised the modern technologies used in this type of agriculture, which provides new possibilities in front of those wishing to invest in the agricultural sector, away from the challenges of soil and water availability.
He pointing out that this project supports the state’s efforts to enhance food security.
