Qatar takes part in Arab passenger transport meeting

The meeting of the technical committee supervising the implementation of the Arab agreement to regulate passenger transport on roads between and through Arab countries kicked off on Sunday at the headquarters of the Arab League’s General Secretariat, under the chairpersonship of Palestine, with the aim of activating the Arab agreement to regulate passenger transport, which was approved by the Council of Arab Transport Ministers in 2004.
Qatar is participating in the meeting with a delegation consisting of the Ministries of Transport, Communication and the Interior, as well as the General Authority of Customs.
The committee includes representatives of the state parties (Jordan, UAE, Iraq, Palestine, Libya and Yemen), including Qatar and a representative from the Arab Union for Land Transport as an observer.
In a statement on the sidelines of the meeting, the Director of Transport and Tourism Administration at the League Dr. Dina Al Zaher said that this agreement aims to encourage Arab tourism between Arab countries and remove restrictions and obstacles to international passenger transport via roads between Arab countries, in order to strengthen and develop social and economic ties.
She stressed that this agreement comes in fulfilment of what is stipulated in Article 2 of the Charter of the Arab League that close cooperation must be established among Arab countries in economic and financial affairs.
The League’s General Secretariat has invited all the Arab countries to address the obstacles that prevent them from joining the agreement, and work to find practical solutions to overcome these obstacles, in order to encourage the rest of the Arab countries to join the agreement, Al Zaher added.
The committee takes binding decisions according to the provisions of the rules of procedure of the Council of Arab Transport Ministers regarding the issues arising from the interpretation and application of this agreement by a two-thirds majority of the votes, she added.
