Biden bans Russia oil imports as Zelensky vows to fight Moscow in ‘forests, fields and shores’

US President Joe Biden announced a ban on Russian oil and other energy imports on Tuesday in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine, underscoring strong bipartisan support for a move that he acknowledged would drive up US energy prices.
“We’re banning all imports of Russian oil and gas energy,” Biden told reporters at the White House. “That means Russian oil will no longer be acceptable in US ports and the American people will deal another powerful blow to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war machine.”
In a speech to the House of Commons, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky invoked British war leader Winston Churchill, vowing to fight invading Russian troops in the air, sea and on the streets.
“We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets,” he said.
Zelensky repeated his call for a no-fly zone to be established by the West, begging for Britain to “make sure that our Ukrainian skies are safe.”
Meanwhile, more than 2 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia began its invasion, as Moscow’s bombardment of its neighbour intensified on Tuesday. Most have sought shelter in Poland as well as Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Slovakia, a UN refugee agency spokesperson said as the war progressed through its second week. Some 100,000 foreign citizens were among the 2 million who have fled, the UN Organization for Migration said.
